Writing practice

I was already a fan of Natalie Goldbergs ideas on writing, and listening to her double CD , "Old Friend from Far Away", about writing memoir, reinforced that.

She advocates daily 'writing practice' and she herself fills one notebook per month, writing edge to edge in the margins as well, a practice I've since adopted.

Around Xmas I re-discovered handwriting and started filling a writing-practice notebook. Now I have some full writing notebooks on my shelf, preening trhemselves in front of the row of empty ones.

She does say that freewriting-practice is about keeping your hand moving, so anything goes, but much as I enjoy this, it feels like cheating. A lot of it is filled with 'thinking out loud' so I'm going to start a fiction-writing-practice notebook next. I can write anything at all as long as it's fiction, rather than thoughts about fiction.

If this proves to be too hard, I'll start another one and use the two in parallel.
