A bag of ferrets

Plot - I've always thought of 'plot' as a nice structure. The sort of thing you see when you walk by a part-built house. Even though it's only half finished you can already see that it's strong and organised and knows exactly where it's going. But structure didn't work for me. It only hemmed me in.

One day I read that plot is 'dynamic'. Scratches head and looks out the window. I wonder if the cat knows what that means?

Gradually I worked it out. Plot is a bag of ferrets. Open the bag and plot will run off in all directions, racing down holes, up drain-pipes etc. That's why I need to get to know my ferrets much much better.
Up till now I've started stories without knowing the ferrets -what they each want, and how each one will behave in situations- so I've always ground to a halt unable to decide which direction to take my story.

Another way of putting this is: "Plot is character."
